The Chris Waller trained runner produced a stunning run to get over the top of second placed Gold Trip, Knights Order and Montefilia.

Durston becomes the first ever emergency to win the Caulfield Cup, etching its name into the record books. Durston entered the race paying $18 with bookmakers.

Gold Trip with Mark Zahra aboard looked to have the race won, but in the dying stages was pipped by Durston.

“What an amazing win in the Caulfield Cup, it’s a big deal,” Waller said after the victory.

Pre-race favourite Smokin’ Romans, ridden by Jamie Kah, was trapped in traffic as the came around the final bend and attempted to cut back on the inside. But after finding a clear lane the damage had been done as the outsiders pulled away.

Aerial footage of Durston’s victory showed just how absurd the winning run was, as Michael Dee had to weave his way through the other horses to find some clear air.

Dee perfectly trailed Gold Trip’s path before exploding in the final 100m to storm home and secure the historic win.
