Exclusive: Rising pop star Faouzia talks her new single "Tears of Gold"

Pop singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Faouzia’s powerful vocals take center stage on her latest single, and her third released this year, “Tears of Gold.” The 19-year-old Moroccan-Canadian’s distinct voice and powerful presence make her one to watch in 2020.

We caught up with Faouzia to talk about “Tears of Gold,” the music video, and some of her highlights from 2019!

Hi Faouzia! Tell us a bit about your new single. What was your inspiration for “Tears of Gold”?

Growing up, I have always been someone that gives my all to people that I love. Unfortunately, this has left me feeling drained and empty when it wasn’t reciprocated. I would get led on to believe that the friendship was double-sided when in reality, it wasn’t. I wrote “Tears of Gold” about my past behaviours and for people to know that although it may seem like the right thing to do, it isn’t always the case. 

What has the reaction to the song been like?

The reaction to this song has been the best yet! I posted a snippet of “Tears of Gold” back in June and many people wanted to hear the full song. After eagerly finishing the writing, production, and music video, I was finally able to release the song to the world! I was so happy to see people love it and to see their reaction to the video as well. It also amassed 500k streams in a week which has been the biggest launch, yet!

We love the music video! Can you tell us about the concept and process behind it?
The music video is very literal in the sense where I am seen crying tears of gold. I wanted to have something very simple but eye-catching that lets the song live but also adds visuals for the viewers to enjoy. I wanted to have rich and warm colours, but I also insisted on sparkle and glitter to make things pop a bit more!

You have quite a distinct voice and musical style-  how would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before?

I would describe my music as pop with an oriental flair in my voice. I think lyrics are so important so I make sure to have impactful lyrics with a message paired with catchy pop melodies. 

Are there any plans for an EP or album in the works?

I have been writing so much music the past 2 years and I have so many songs that I want you all to hear. Nothing is set in stone yet in terms of an album, but I’ll definitely be releasing many singles this upcoming year. 

How do you think you’ve grown as an artist since you first started writing songs and singing?

I think I have grown lyrically and in the way I express myself through music. Working with many producers has allowed me to see music through different lenses and let me explore so many worlds of music. 

What were some of the highlights of 2019 for you?

2019 was such an amazing year for me musically! I think the highlights were definitely the fawn family growing significantly over the summer. Another highlight would be collaborating with Ninho and also releasing so many tracks that I loved to the world. 

Do you have any plans or goals for the new year? 
My goal every year is to be better than I was the previous year.

Is there anything else you’d like to say about “Tears of Gold” or to fans of your music?
I would like my fans to know that I love them so dearly and that I appreciate every single one of them. I also want them to know that lots of new music is coming and I can’t wait for them to hear it.
