Live like a king in a historic Gawler bluestone mansion
Gawler mansion Tortola House gives you the chance to not only own a slice of SA’s history, but the flexibility to use the property in a number of different ways.
Paul and Joanne Westermann bought the home in 2003, attracted by its striking design and architectural style. It consists of an 1870-built bluestone home, a large cottage, and a vacant allotment on which the Westermanns have had approval to build three townhouses.
“We used to sit outside the house and look at it and think it would be nice if we could get it, and it worked out that we could get it,” Mr Westermann said.
“We loved the features in the house because it’s quite unique and it’s got a rich history. The house was built by former Gawler mayor and builder William F. Wincey, who lived there until the 1880s. Another industrialist, one of the May brothers, lived up here until the turn of the century and then it was sold to the local church which used it as a manse. Then it came onto the market because it was unfit for pastoral work and we’re the second owners since then.”
The main home has five bedrooms, a formal lounge, a dining room, a family room, a drawing room, an underground living room and a cellar. The separate cottage has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a lounge, a family area and a cellar.
“When people walk through the door they say ‘wow, what a property!’,” Mr Westermann says.
“We’d love to see a family come into it and love it. It’s been an extremely happy house, and despite its size, is very manageable.”
