Nolan and Talia are on call and she reminds him that he has to know his rookie book by heart. They get a call for an armed robbery in progress and head to the scene. When they get there, Talia stays on the scene when Nolan runs after a guy and manages to catch him. The guy was about to propose to his fiancee and both Talia and Nolan let them get engaged and then go on with the arrest.

Lucy is testing Nolan, he tells her that he never had a good proposal story and doesn’t know if he will ever get married again anyway. Nolan starts kissing Lucy and she loses concentration.

The next day at the station, it is a special day for the rookies. They switch things up, everyone gets a new training officer. Nolan is with officer Lopez. West is with Bradford and Chen with Bishop. This is not there only challenge, by the next shift they need to uncover something personal about their training officer. Something, they don’t want them to know. The winner gets a day off, the loser gets Saturday night cavity searches.

Nolan and Lopez start on the wrong foot when he wants to drive and she won’t let him. They are headed to court, she has to be there for a few hours. While he is waiting, Nolan tries studying when an inmate passes him and blesses him when he sneezes. All of a sudden, Nolan hears a noise and the prisoner is on the loose. Nolan runs after him, with his book and papers in tow, he doesn’t catch him. Lopez tells him to keep his books at home next time. Next, they head to Garcia’s house, who escaped custody. Garcia is not answering so Nolan has an idea, to speak to a kid that is selling lemonade. The kid tells them his neighbor is a drug dealer and he is at his daughter’s fifteenth birthday.

Meanwhile, West and Bradford have a rocky start when Bradford tries to break his spirit from the start. The two are on a stakeout after a gun runner.

Chen tries to talk and Bishop interrupts her by saying that if she wants to get it on with Nolan and ruin her reputation, that is her problem, she only cares if it impacts her performance. They pull off a car with an expired registration and four kids make a run for it. Chen catches one of them, Bishop gets angry with her because she didn’t get the driver. Bishop tells her to cut him loose, they can only charge the driver.

Bishop tells Chen that she has a fundamental misunderstanding of what is happening. Learning how to be a cop is the hardest thing she will ever do, and instead of focusing on the task at hand, she splits her focus to be with Nolan. And, she risks losing everything if he is found out.

West and Bradford go after the gun runner, there are dogs around the property. Gunfire starts and West starts to panic.

Bradford confronts Lopez and asks her what the hell was she thinking to let hit the streets with a broken rookie. Lopez says that she thought she helped him get past his problem. Lopez says they can’t do anything, his father is a commander in internal affairs, this is political whether he likes it or not. Both don’t know what to do.

West tells Nolan that he froze the moment the bullets started and it’s not the first time. Bradford tells Nolan to walk away.

Chen and Bishop respond to a call that a girl is being held against her will. They head to a trailer and talk to a girl who says that she is not allowed to speak to her real mom, her foster mom is stopping her.

West tells Bradford that he is committed to the job, and asks him to fix him. Bradford says he doesn’t deal with lost causes, he should prepare for tomorrow to be his last day on the job.

At home, Lucy tells Nolan that Talia knows about them and said it would be a mistake if she kept dating him.

Bradford and West head to Wallace’s apartment, Bradford tells West to talk to him and walks away. The guy closes the door on West, but after a few minutes lets him in the apartment to talk. They talk about Wallace not leaving the apartment for 15 months. West tells him that he is afraid of bullets going off, Wallace’s advice is to deal with it right away.,

Bishop’s little girl, Sara, who said she was being held against her will, shows up at the station. Sara says that she spoke to her mom and she wants her back. Bishop explains that her mom needs to be clean before she gets her back. Bishop shares her own story about being a foster kid.

Nolan and Lopez go see Garcia in prison, he says thank you to them for letting him dance with his 15-year old daughter. For that, he has a gift for them. A drug deal is going down, a large shipment, something that will get you noticed. He says the exchange is going down in two hours so they better make a deal with the DA.

Back at the station, a plan is made to steak out the drug deal. West thanks Bradford for not outing him to Grey. Grey tells him that if this bust goes sideways he does not get out of the car.

Chen tells Bishop that she doesn’t want to break up with Nolan because she likes him.

The drug deal goes down and shots are fired, one car tried to get away. Bradford is trying his best, West is still in the car. Nolan manages to stop one of the gunmen, West gets behind the wheel of the car and hits another one.

Bishop and Chen are still chasing another one until he hits a construction cement wall.

At the station, everyone tells Grey that they didn’t find out anything about their partners.

Bradford tells Lopez that he fixed her rookie.

At home, Nolan tries to break up with Lucy because he doesn’t want to be responsible for her failing. Lucy is upset, she walks out and tells him that she will see him at work.
