Travis’ popularity never wavered despite a drop in chart success in the 1990s. He has sold over 25 million recordings and received numerous honors, including seven Grammy Awards. 2016 saw Randy’s induction into the County Music Hall of Fame.

In 2013, Travis had a stroke that significantly impacted his capacity for speaking and singing.

Where Is Randy Travis In 2022?

Randy Travis flatlined due to viral cardiomyopathy in the summer of 2013, but physicians were able to bring him back to life. He continued to be in a coma nonetheless, and the doctors discovered a hidden stroke a few days later.

To make room for the swelling, Travis required the removal of a portion of his skull. After five and a half months, Randy was discharged from the hospital and was prepared to start his recovery. Randy and his wife Mary Davis were unfortunate to have yet another setback after learning that Travis had aphasia. The syndrome is widespread among stroke survivors.

Every day, Tracy, a recent music degree holder, visited Travis’ house to assist him in regaining his singing talent. She began by explaining Amazing Grace to him. Travis struggled for two months to create the letter “A,” but once he did, the other words started to flow naturally.

Since singing and speech are controlled by distinct sections of the brain, some stroke victims, like Travis, can regain their singing skills more quickly than their ability to speak normally. During his 2016 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Randy was able to recover enough to sing a little passage of Amazing Grace without any help. On The Big Interview with Dan Rather, Mary Davis stated:

“We probably practiced that song for six hours a day, attempting to learn the words and sing all four verses. I believe he changed back into Travis when I handed him the microphone. It was breathtakingly lovely.

Travis keeps putting out music and is well-known on TikTok.

Travis’s baritone voice, which won over the world, is unlikely to return, but the music still holds a special place in his heart. He frequently travels to Nashville and haphazardly attends musical performances by local performers in Tioga, Texas. Randy’s love of music was discussed by Mary with Saving Country Music:

“He enjoys music. We stop to watch people who are performing nearby or wherever we are traveling. There is an extra heartbeat whenever we can hear music. He will always adore singing and playing music, of course. Since music is a person’s essence, we enjoy going to see other musicians perform. The world received just that from him. The world now enjoys returning it to him.

Randy debuted his first song following a stroke in the summer of 2020. Millions of streams were made by the song Fool’s Love Affair, which also dominated the airways. Before having the stroke, Randy wrote the song, and according to Mary, he has more songs from other points in his career that are soon to be released.

Randy has discovered the ideal opportunity to communicate with his fans through TikTok. Randy enjoys singing duets with his followers. One of Randy’s most endearing duets was when he sang Hey Good Lookin’ by Hank Williams with GB of GBandMe. While singing the tune of Hank’s well-known song, Randy couldn’t help but smile.

Although Randy is still recovering, his wife acknowledges that he does occasionally get shut down.

Mary reveals in Randy’s DVD More Life that the medical staff asked her to stop Randy’s life support. In response to the question, Randy sobbed and squeezed Mary’s hand. The reply implied that he wanted to engage in combat.

Randy signed up for counseling earlier than Mary anticipated. But relearning the functions his brain had forgotten was exhausting and unpleasant. Mary revealed to Ability Magazine that Randy stopped:

It did reach a point when Randy had essentially stopped responding. He eventually reached the point where he refused to go, but I forced him to, and once we arrived, he would simply sit down. He had stopped. When it reaches that point, they need a break, even the therapist acknowledged. And trying to restart is exhausting; I can only imagine what it must be like for them.

Randy and Mary valued any sign of improvement because of the difficulty. Since Mary and Travis had never experienced a stroke or aphasia, his recovery was an eye-opening experience. Mary used to think that anyone who didn’t reply to her had nothing to say.

She told Ability Magazine that Randy’s experience had made her consider whether others who don’t speak up would not be able to succeed:

“Now that we’ve been through this, I’ve heard people walk away and say, “Well, I guess he doesn’t have anything to say to me,” if they speak to Randy or attempt to have a conversation with him but he doesn’t respond. “Oh my my, he does, but he has aphasia,” you think.

The Grand Ole Opry celebrated Randy’s 35 years of participation in the family in December 2021. When artists and fans celebrated Randy’s accomplishments, he was present and appeared ecstatic.

Randy had a great year in 2021 since CMT recognized him as Artist of a Lifetime. He also released a remastered version of Storms of Life, his debut LP, to coincide with its 35th anniversary.
